Lil Wayne aka Weezy the latest “casualty” in the rap world to become a member of the penitentiary is receiving accolades and shout outs from our community who have vehemently shown their support as he embarks on his new role as inmate number 07xxxxx (it always starts with the year of the arrest).
Personally I haven’t paid much attention to this case and I rather not. Yet I couldn’t help but pay attention as it struck me while I was working out yesterday and watching 106 and Park. Mind you folks, I hardly ever watch this show. BET has no justification for having this show on for 2 hours. However, in order to keep up with the youngsters as I am a mother of a tween I tend to watch the show now and then primarily when I’m at the gym. Aside from the annoying talentless Justin Bieber, that’s a whole other topic, I couldn’t help but notice that Rocsi (who by the way I’m wondering where did she get her Communications degree from, she may not want to shout out her college, I’m saying….) well anywho Rocsi gave a huge shout out to Lil Wayne and said we support you as you hold it down. The crowd clapped and cheered in agreement. Being a woman of mature years who has come from the street, I’m like, Huh??? Holding it down? Rich ass Lil Wayne? For a minute there I had to catch myself and wonder is Lil Wayne in Iraq or Afghanistan. Is he in Haiti stuck in a mudslide? Why are WE supporting him? What is he doing that is so incredible? Is it because he’s incarcerated? Was he wrongfully accused? Is he in prison for self-defense? Did he not have adequate representation? As I understand none of the above scenarios apply; so why are WE SUPPORTING him??
Lil Wayne was convicted in New York City to 8 months in jail for a 2007 gun possession charge. Not a little gun but a .40 caliber semi-automatic. He was also charged in 2008 in Yuma, Arizona for having cocaine, ecstasy and a handgun on his tour bus. Far be it for me to say but Weezy you haven’t been a model citizen.
I’m trusting with the decisions he has made in his life that he is somewhat an intelligent young man, aside from the criminal element. There’s no doubt that Mr. Carter is quite the artist, which just doesn’t mean glitz and glam. After all we the public only see the end result of Weezy’s hard work which I’m sure is much more intense than getting in front of a mic and just spitting lyrics. We’re talking about someone who is creative, poetic and from the looks of it has great business sense; remember he put Drake on. Yet Mr. Weezy finds himself in these debacles. Like Arsenio use to say “things that make you go hmmmm…..”
We can go on and on say to ourselves Little Wayne is a product of the “man” who doesn’t want to see black men succeed. OK, let’s say its that and obviously that issue is not a secret and if that is the case then why do our young affluent Black men act so STUPID. If you know you are a target why in the world would you paint the bulls eye red! Honestly Weezy was asking for trouble. From what I can see he’s obviously very well financially endowed, therefore, I’m sure bodyguards who are licensed to carry guns could be hired and chances are they already were and as far as the drugs, hire somebody to do that too! I look at Wayne and see a waste of a black man in prison not your regular black prisoner but a real c’mon son you don’t have to be there. A complete WASTE!
I for one can not support the likes of Lil Wayne and nor will accept the justified excuse of him being targeted. Wayne you are NOT STUPID, you just act that way and it’s time to stop. As for the rest of us, you should be SMACKED for supporting his actions. We have so many of our brothers and sisters who are: Fighting a senseless war; Serving insane prison sentences (can someone say Rockefeller laws); Wrongfully accused (Innocent till proven guilty, we all know it’s the other way around); and those that fall into the “Precious” category of unspoken abuse. These are the ones that I will clap and cheer for, they have my undying support!
On a final note to Rocsi from 106 & Park and her audience including those watching from home, think about where you put your mouth and energy in terms of who you’re supporting. If Lil Wayne shot you or a member of your family I can only hope you would think logically and see the ill his actions can cause. As far as Rocsi and members of BET you are not children, yet you are speaking to them. You have an adult responsibility to be moral. Urging impressionable young minds to overlook and support this behavior is overly reckless. I end this post with a quote from James Baldwin “Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them.” Let us hope and pray our children do not follow in Lil Weezy’s footsteps as it pertains to this calamity but pay attention to his entrepreneurial spirit and prosper as we know they can!
